Tip of the Week – The Salesforce Translation Workbench does more than translate

If you have, or are building, a strong Salesforce system for your team, you should understand Managed Packages from the AppExchange. The AppExchange is your home for powerful, prebuilt, custom solutions for your business. Apps are broken up by Managed and Unmanaged – Unmanaged Packages do not receive upgrades, and are fully customizable, as if you’d built them yourself, where Managed Packages cannot be significantly modified, but can be upgraded over time, allowing you to get the latest new features offered by the developers. Managed packages may present a problem if your team needs to make adjustments to field or object labels, since these cannot be modified. But by using the Salesforce Translation Workbench, you can make Salesforce speak your language and lexicon.

The Translation Workbench was originally designed for businesses operating in multiple languages. While many of the out of the box Salesforce features are offered in different languages, you will still need a way to translate your custom work for your users in their native tongue. The Translation Workbench allows you to designate the language for a translation of a field, button, object, and more, including your own, and works with most aspects of Salesforce, including Managed Packages. To change labels related to a managed package, go to Setup -> Translation Workbench -> Translation Settings and enable the workbench. From the same tab, add a supported language (or languages). Next, go to Override, choose the package, language, and component you want to translate – I recommend looking around here, as there are a lot of things you can do. In the Override column, enter the new label you want and save. Then go confirm the change is reflected. It takes a little getting used to, but once you’re familiar with the workings of the Translation Workbench, it can be a powerful tool for admins!
